It’s easy to lose track of our overall well-being in this fast paced world that we are living in. From all the technology that jobs require and getting wrapped up in social media on a daily basis. This can lead to unhealthy habits and distract you from other important factors in your life. When I find myself going down this route, I unplug and hit the trails. It took me years to figure out how to get out of that rut. Then, one day when I was on a hike, I stopped to take in the beauty that was surrounding me. I didn’t pull out my phone to snap a photo, I wasn’t looking at work emails. I simply sat on a rock and soaked in all the views, smells and sounds (lack thereof).
That day, I learned that hiking heals. The healing properties that nature has to offer can be so beneficial to mental health. I can personally attest to this. ‘Hiking Heals’ will be focused on how to regain your mental health by unplugging and immersing yourself in nature. I’ll be sharing some tidbits that helped me get back on track along our journey.
I’ll be the first to tell you that I’m just as guilty at doing this. As a paramedic, I put all my focus into caring for my patients and working absurd hours due to staffing shortages to ensure that my community was taken care of. I’ve seen things that the human eye was never meant to see. As a result from all of this, my mental health was at an all time low. I was in desperate need of an answer to get back on track.
The beauty of unplugging from the chaos in today’s society and immersing yourself in nature is that you have time to reflect on the things that have been going on in your life. As previously, the demands of work and the distractions from social media tend to hinder us from looking back at the moments that have molded us into the people we are today.
Not long after, I decided to embark on my first solo adventure. I traveled to Ouray, Colorado for a 1 week healing journey. Immersing myself in the solitude of the stunning San Juan mountains is just what the doctor ordered. I’ve read numerous articles on how life-altering solo journeys could be, but never took advantage of it until I reached a point of disparity.
As a result, I forced myself to keep my phone in my pocket as I sat in some of the most awe-inspiring scenery and I reflected on the things in my life that have made me the man I am today. Because of this, I now know exactly what I need to do to maintain my mental health. Reflection is a powerful thing when it comes to mental health. I challenge each and every one of you to give it a shot whenever you have a moment to do so. It will change your life.
Have I mentioned how crucial it is to unplug to escape the chaos of everyday stressors? What better way to do this than practicing mindful moments! Some examples of these are taking a walk in natural areas surrounded by trees or plants, sitting in a quiet area next to a creek or other body of water, or finding a peaceful spot to sunbathe for a moment.
Studies have shown that spending just 20 minutes in nature can drastically improve your mental health. I can attest to this study. When I feel myself getting overwhelmed by life, I dedicate 20 minutes (at a minimum) of going outside in a quiet area and observe my surroundings. There is nothing more soothing than finding a peaceful area to gather your thoughts and regain focus. Whether you choose to take a stroll or find a cozy spot to sit, utilize this moment to be mindful.
Another aspect that you should focus on during mindful moments is all the senses that are diminished from life’s distractions. As I’ve mentioned before, it is imperative to find a natural area to unwind. As you immerse yourself, focus on the different scents, sounds and textures that surround you. One of my favorite ways to practice a mindful moment is kicking off the shoes and walking through a pasture of lush grass or admiring a sunset as I dip my feet in a chilly creek.
Observing the natural textures of the grass on your bare feet or the rush of cool water from a creek is a great way to become one with nature. In addition to textures, close your eyes for a moment and take some deep breaths and listen to the noises that are coming from the environment. By closing your eyes, your smelling and hearing senses will become enhanced.
To sum up the practice of mindful moments, ensure to find a peaceful area in nature. Spend at least 20 minutes focusing on the environment such as the different textures, scents and sounds that the universe creates. FInd a natural area and walk barefoot to become grounded with nature. Above all, soak in the moment and relax. It will drastically improve your overall health.
The quote “Sky above, Earth below, Peace within” is very sentimental to me. It is a mantra that I have used often when I feel myself sliding into a rut. I’ve also made it the primary theme of my brand. When life gets overwhelming, I make it a priority to get outside and go for a hike. Whether it’s a hiking adventure or a local hike close to home. Focusing on the sky above and the earth below truly gives me peace within.
Having a meaningful quote or mantra will keep you motivated and focus your attention away from the negativity that you may be going through in times of vulnerability. As with most things, it’s easier said than done. It takes practice, but it is more than worth the effort. Maintaining your mental health is priceless.
In addition to having an inspirational saying to live by, physical activity in nature is proven to enhance positive mental health. What better way to get exercise outside than hiking?! Hiking is low impact (for the most part) which won’t be as harsh on your joints as running. Hiking also induces endorphins, which is a natural hormone that is released during activities that you enjoy. This will drastically improve your mental health.
Other positive impacts for mental health while hiking is getting a natural source of Vitamin D through sunlight exposure. Vitamin D is critical in overall health, but also enhances energy levels and boosts your mood. Always remember to apply sunscreen for skin protection (especially in higher elevations). Breathing in fresh air provided by mother nature can also help your mental health. When your brain is adequately oxygenated, your thought process is clearer which can lead to a more positive outlook on life. Further, have you ever had a negative thought while admiring a snow-capped mountain range while munching on your favorite trail snack? I didn’t think so!
Mental health is a broad subject that just started gaining recognition not too long ago. There are many avenues to discover in efforts to improve mental health all around. I am a firm believer that spending time in nature is one of the most beneficial ways to improve mental health. It is by no means a “cure all”, but it is a solid foundation to enhance overall well being. There is an abundance of resources online regarding mental health. Please don’t ignore the signs that could indicate a decline in your mental health. I am more than happy to guide you in the right direction. As a healthcare professional who has been down some dark roads, my goal is to ensure that everyone has a source to get back on the right track to live a purposeful life.
If you’re at a loss of what to do in the efforts of improving your mental health, try some of the techniques that are discussed in this post. If that doesn’t do the trick, then consider reaching out to a mental health professional. Nature does amazing things when it comes to healing, which is why I’m such an advocate for incorporating it into mental health practices.
If anyone ever needs to talk or is looking for a way to get back on track, don’t hesitate to reach out to a loved one and tell them how you’re feeling. Talking goes a long way. Doing this while hiking with a buddy or loved one can be life-altering. This is why I truly believe that hiking heals.
